From a budget to a running project
The free spreadsheet helps set your budget. The optional £19 Renovation Project Pack adds records for quotes, agreed changes, payments and deliveries. This is the fictional utility-room example supplied with the pack, not a customer project or a market-price estimate.
Start with a £7,500 budget, including a £750 reserve. Record each accepted quote, attach approved changes to the relevant job, then log payments against it. At the worked example’s weekly review, the figures are:
| Project record | Amount |
|---|---|
| Latest forecast | £6,410 |
| Paid to date | £3,050 |
| Budget headroom | £1,090 |
| Proposed changes not in forecast | £95 |
Approved extras belong in the forecast. Proposed changes stay separate until agreed, and payments reduce what remains to pay without adding the same cost again.
Optional paid download. The budget spreadsheet above remains free, with no sign-up.
How to use it
- Delete the rows you are not doing. Everything totals on its own.
- Set your area factor at the top so the guide prices reflect your region.
- As quotes come in, type each one in and check it against the Costwise range beside it.
- Put what you actually pay in the final column and watch the budget dashboard update.
- Keep a contingency. 10% on a newer home, 15% or more on an older one, for the things you cannot see until work starts.
These are independent Costwise guide-price ranges, reviewed June to October 2026, not quotes for your specific job. A quote inside the range is a fair starting point; one well outside it is worth questioning. The figures match our guide pages, and the underlying data is free to download as a CSV, licensed CC BY 4.0 (reuse with a credit to Costwise).
