Block paving is priced by the square metre and sits above tarmac and resin on cost, because every block is laid by hand. The area, the base and the block type drive the price.

Block paving cost by driveway size
Block paving is quoted by the square metre, so the area does most of the work in the price. These are the sizes most UK driveways come out at.
| Driveway size | Area | Typical total |
|---|---|---|
| Path or side access | 10 m² | £600 to £1,200 |
| Single car driveway | 20 m² | £1,200 to £2,400 |
| Two car driveway | 40 m² | £2,400 to £4,800 |
| Double-width or long driveway | 70 m² | £4,200 to £8,400 |
Totals are the guide rate of £60 to £120 per m² applied to each size. Indicative, not quotes.
What's included in the price?
Typical block paving prices include:
- Local preparation of a suitable existing base; full excavation and a new sub-base are the separate calculator option
- Sand bedding layer and edging restraints
- Blocks supplied and laid to your pattern
- Jointing sand, compaction and clean-up
What changes the price?
The things that move block paving prices most:
Total area in square metres
Whether a new sub-base is needed
Block type: concrete is cheapest, clay and natural stone cost more
Pattern complexity, borders and any drainage
A 40 m² driveway with and without a new base
The £60 to £120 per m² base allowance gives £2,400 to £4,800 at 40 m². A new sub-base adds £25 to £45 per m², or £1,000 to £1,800, taking the guide total to £3,400 to £6,600. The first range assumes the existing base is suitable and only local preparation is needed.
Ask the installer to specify excavation depth, disposal, sub-base material and compacted thickness. If their quote already includes full excavation and reconstruction, do not add this calculator option again. Drainage changes, retaining work and awkward access need their own scope.
Compare the same block product, laying pattern, edging length and drainage layout. Photograph any sinking or standing water before the survey; relaying blocks over an unsuitable base does not resolve the cause.

Common questions
How much does block paving cost for a driveway?
A typical 50 square metre block-paved drive costs roughly £3,000 to £6,000, depending on the block type and whether a new sub-base is needed.
How much is block paving per m² including the dig-out and a new base?
About £85 to £165 per m²: the £60 to £120 per m² laying rate on this page plus £25 to £45 per m² to dig out and build a new sub-base. That is the figure to compare with most installers' published prices, because they usually quote the whole job, dig-out included. A 40 m² drive comes to about £3,400 to £6,600 on that basis, before drainage, new edging runs or a dropped kerb. If your existing base is sound and only needs local preparation, the lower £60 to £120 per m² applies.
Is block paving worth it over tarmac?
Block paving costs more but is easy to repair (you can lift and relay individual blocks) and many people prefer the look. Tarmac is cheaper and quicker but harder to patch invisibly.
Do I need planning permission for a block paved driveway?
Not if the paving is permeable, or if the water drains to a lawn or soakaway within your boundary. Since 2008, paving over more than 5 m² of front garden with an impermeable surface that drains to the road does need planning permission, which is why most installers quote permeable blocks or include drainage as standard.
How long does block paving last?
A properly laid block driveway lasts 20 to 25 years or more. The blocks themselves rarely fail; the base does, which is why the £25 to £45 per m² for a new sub-base is worth paying when the existing one is suspect. Expect to re-sand the joints every few years and re-bed the odd sunken patch.
Is block paving cheaper than a slabbed patio?
They overlap: block paving runs £60 to £120 per m² while patio slabs run £70 to £220 depending on the stone. Basic concrete slabs undercut blocks; porcelain or natural stone costs more. For a driveway the comparison is moot, as slabs are rarely suitable for vehicles unless they are specified for it.
Can I lay block paving myself?
You can, and doing your own labour saves a real share of the £60 to £120 per m² cost, leaving the blocks, sub-base and sand. It is hard physical work though, and the groundwork is what matters: a deep, compacted sub-base and accurate falls for drainage. Blocks that sink, rut or hold water are a big job to lift and relay, so it only pays off if you are confident with the base and levels.
